Vjesci
The vjesci is the vampire of the Kashubians of Pomerania, a person marked for undeath by being born with a caul. After burial the corpse chews its own shroud and limbs, then kills its family in order of kinship and at last the whole parish by tolling the bell. Kashubian households tried to prevent it at birth by feeding the powdered caul to the child. It combines the shroud-eating of German lore with the walking, feeding corpse of the Slavic vampire.1
- prevention: the caul is dried, burned to powder and given to the child in milk
- digging up the body and cutting off the head with a graveyard spade
Waxa ilaha yidhaahdaan
It first eats its own shroud and the flesh of its hands and feet1
It then devours the living, beginning with its closest kin and working outwards1
When no relatives are left it rings the church bells at night, and everyone within earshot dies1
Beheading with a sexton's spade stops the deaths1
The self-devouring in the grave links it to the German Nachzehrer1
