Woman of Levín

A tún ń pè é ní: witch of Levín

The woman of Levín is a Bohemian revenant of 1344 who trampled her victims. Her case combines several motifs that later define the German Nachzehrer and the Slavic vampire: the bleeding corpse, the eaten shroud and the body that resists destruction. Fire took hold only when consecrated wood was used. With Myslata of Blov she shows that the full exhume-stake-burn procedure was in use in central Europe by the mid-14th century.1
